Travelling with your pet

When travelling with your pet outside mainland UK, you will either need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or the Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document (PTD).

The Animal Health Certificate is for travel to the EU (incl. the Republic of Ireland).

The Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document is for direct travel from Wales, Scotland or England to Northern Ireland. You cannot travel via an EU country or onwards to an EU country.

To return to Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) your pet must have:

• Readable microchip.
• Valid rabies vaccination.
• Either: A valid animal health certificate, OR an accepted pet passport.
• For dogs only – tapeworm treatment, administered by a vet 24-120 hours prior to arriving in Great Britain. Y

You may be prevented from travelling with your pet if you do not have the correct pet health preparations or documentation.
